Residents Fight Back At Fire Safety Bill

Southwark council have been making fire safety improvements to three of their tower block buildings after a fire broke out in a 14 storey block and killed six people. London fire and emergency planning authority issued 3 enforcement notices for not carrying out full fire risk assessments on any of the buildings.
Leaseholders will now share a bill of £500,000 as the council insists to re-wire the entire properties, pest control and changes to the bin chutes. The leaseholders claim that initially they were told verbally that the bill would be £7,500 per household, yet were recently issued with their written bills of £15,600. The council claims that it is absolutely necessary that they improve all the issues stated but residents feel that they should only pay for what is required by the fire enforcement notices and the council pays the rest. "We feel, as leaseholders, there has been a prejudice against our rights of information" says one of the residents as most feel they would like to bring the council to court to dispute the amount charged on their bill.
