Lets Discuss... Fire Doors

The very worthwhile efforts and application of science that has gone into the design and construction of Fire Doors really do deserve a greater profile, if only to raise awareness of their importance and the huge difference that they can make in the event of a fire. If all staff could see the difference between two rooms separated by effective fire doors in a building which has suffered a fire, an appreciation of the protection fire doors can afford would be endemic. It really is like walking from a disaster area into normality in the space of a few tens of millimetres. How often do we see fire doors wedged open for one reason or another or gaps between door leaves in excess of the 4mm requirement?
As is all too common in the human approach to disaster there is perhaps an overriding sense of “It’ll never happen to me” and the risk of fire is perceived no differently. As with all disasters however, the aftermath of fire can be catastrophic.
We hear much today about disaster recovery plans and business continuity, yet it appears from assessing disparate organisations, structures and buildings that very few appreciate that just like charity, the application of these current ‘buzz’ words begins at home with Building Components, Fire safety Arrangements and Fire Safety Strategy. Consider the image above for the difference that well maintained Fire Doors can make.
Frequently Asked QuestionsQ. Can I upgrade my existing door (non fire rated door) to be fire resistant?
A. The simple answer is no. You cannot be certain how old doors are constructed, the density of the timber and how the components interact with the overall installation. You should replace the door and frame to be completely safe.
Q. What components does my fire door need?
A. Your fire door components can vary. Typical components for fire rated doors are; Ironmongery (closers, locks latches and handles), intumescent, smoke and acoustic seals & glass. I must add, there is a great importance in the correct size and fitting of any of your components.
Q. I need to buy a fire seal for my fire rated door - which product should I buy?
A. The first thing to check is the fire door manufacturers test evidence for the door that you have. Whatever type of seal they have tested it with, is what you should buy. Also please remember that just because you have a seal it doesn’t make it a fire door. Smoke Seals must be properly installed and maintained to work correctly.
Q. What regulations and standards must I follow relating to fire doors?
A. The principle regulation and guidance is contained in Approved Document B. However in addition, fire rated doors must fulfil other Building Regulation requirements as described in other Approved Documents which are; Sound (E), Ventilation (F), Thermal (L), Accessibility (M), Safety glazing (N) and Security.
Q. How do I obtain a manufacturer’s test certificate for the door?
A. This isn’t necessary. The label on the door provides information such as the Certification test number, manufacturers name and unique door number. If a certificate is a must, your manufacturer can provide you with one.
