For those of us with a festive disposition, the month of December is all about Christmas! During this time we spend time at home with the family enjoying the splendour of Christmas. Lights, candles, decorations and celebrations, as enjoyable as this time can be for us, there are certain precautions that it would be prudent to consider.

Many are unaware of the potential fire hazards and toxic threats that lurk within a combination of fairy lights, candles, flammable decorations, Christmas trees, wrapping paper etc. Following recent fire statistics which showed a rise in the number of accidental fire deaths and injuries over the festive period, we are urging you to take extra precautions when getting into the celebratory spirit.

Good Housekeeping
Fire Safety Awareness at all times is of course essential. The majority of fire incidents are caused by people’s actions and becoming aware of ones surroundings in regard to fire safety will help reduce risk significantly. Place candles up high, never near a curtain or the tree, check fairy lights are working and switch them off be-fore you go to bed. It really is simple, yet tasks like these when neglected have the potential to cause extreme fires.

Watch this video, click here, to see how quickly a Christmas tree, a real one in this case, can go up in flames if it is not watered regularly. A dry tree will spread in a minute and the flames will engulf anything in its path. Wrapping paper, decorations, presents all are fuel for fire.

Fairly light, Christmas Lights, Candles
We've all seen it, houses decorated with glowing reindeer, daisy chain lights, flashing Santa’s and a blow up Snowmen. Even though we may not all decorate to this extent we might have the odd fairy light wrapped around our tree or a few celebratory smelling candles lit around the house. These must be checked and not forgotten about.

Don't overload sockets!

Check fairy lights are in good working order. Fairy lights can be held on to for years (well we only use them two weeks out of a year – so why not) but unsafe and faulty lights can be a major hazard, especially when they are wrapped around a tree which is filled with decorations. The chance for flames to grasp onto flamma-ble objects over Christmas is immense.

Don’t Drink and Dine
Never leave your cooking unattended and please avoid cooking (however hard it may be) and drinking. A big percentage of fires start in the kitchen all year round and this is a high risk area that needs to be controlled in the busiest of times. Always turn off kitchen appliances when you have finished cooking and perhaps ensure that the pudding is soaked in brandy before anyone else!!

Above all you must remember to:

Have a Happy, Merry and Fire Safe Christmas time and a wonderful New Year!!
