York Hospital serves as a hub for its surrounding community, caring for patients with varying medical needs and levels of mobility, making it responsible for the safe evacuation of all patients, staff and visitors. To demonstrate its dedication to evacuation safety, the hospital has teamed up with Evac+Chair International to continue to uphold robust evacuation plans for its occupants.

Approximately 3,000 people are on the hospital’s site each day that potentially require evacuation in an emergency situation, including patients who have heart and respiratory issues, serious injuries and those women in the third trimester of pregnancy.

With previous positive experience with Evac+Chair products, the hospital has installed an additional 20 chairs for its hospital stairwells and in public access areas of their multi-storey car park, to serve as part of their emergency evacuation plans. The chairs are very easy to use and can assist in emergency evacuation of vulnerable and mobility-impaired people.

The hospital has also invested in the ‘Key Trainer Master Class programme’ which provides comprehensive training in the use of equipment so trained staff can instruct other employees, allowing knowledge of how to properly operate the chairs to be easily transferred within the hospital.

Mick Lee, Fire Safety Manager for York Hospital, said: “We fully understand our responsibility to our employees, on-site visitors and patients to make sure everyone is safe in the event of an emergency. Our previous experience with Evac+Chair has been positive so we had no qualms in purchasing additional chairs to use in our evacuation plans. It is also reassuring to know that our staff are fully trained in the use of the chairs should we be faced with an emergency situation.”

Paul Colder, Head of Marketing for Evac+Chair International said: “Emergency evacuation is critical for hospitals, and we are delighted that we can play a part in York Hospital’s strong commitment to its safety standards and facilitating a means for safe evacuation.”

Evac+Chair International has also worked with UK healthcare services and hospitals such as Birmingham Women’s Hospital, CenTre Neonatal Transport Service and West Midlands Ambulance service, helping them to comply with legislation and demonstrate that health and safety considerations are being taken seriously.
